The ABCs of Feelings - B

Continuing my feelings series - the letter B.
B is for feeling Brave
(again, kudos go to Alexandra Delis-Abrams, PhD for this feelings communication tool).

The questions is, when did you feel brave?

I felt brave the day I drove 75 miles to interview for my first Foster Family Social Worker job. It was a perfect job for my skill set and family situation. I got to work from home (imagine that!), work with families in my location, and they gave the dude a beeper.

I was so scared - I hadn't had a formal job (not counting my traineeship) in 4 years. As I was driving to the interview, I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers came on and I knew I was in the will of the Ancient of Days and everything would be alright.

I tried 3 times to embed a youtube acoustical version - to no avail - they explain that havering is an ancient Scots word for talking rubbish. It's a good version, just the 2 of them. Oh well.

It turned out to be a perfect job for me. I did it for 3 years, was able to be home for the kids, for the most part, and I learned a lot.

Can you think of a time when you felt brave?

  1. Love the story and the song!

I am not a very brave person, as a rule. In fact, when I try to think of moments of bravery, I recall moments of fear. I didn't feel brave until after the moment had passed and I'd gotten through it in one piece.

  3. Thanks for stopping by CFN, never been here before...Like the fishies, a lot!
OT: Emotions are like crayons: They are to be used to color our lives, not left in our pockets to cause trouble when our trousers go thru the dryer...Don't ask me how I know this.

Laura b: Bravery is what happens when you reach down fear's throat, grab it by the tail & turn it inside out!

    all the best!

  4. I am a terrible chicken! I can more easily recall the times I have been scared. But driving away from Max to come live here was a brave day for me.I am no spring chick and starting over while wonderful and fun is still a scary thing!

    I love the Proclaimers!

  6. Ananda - Driving away from Max must has caused some tears. But know that you did a great job with him (and all of them!), and this new life of yours is good for all of you!!!!!!

    I love the Proclaimers, too!

  7. I'm a big chicken for some things and a total brave fool over others. A big gator swimming under the canoe I was paddling didn't scare me as much as a dragonfly lighting next to me. I am phobic about bugs invading my space.

  8. One night there were a couple of guys giving a (female) cashier at a 7-11 a hard time, I could tell she was scared. I played it cool, bought my stuff and went to my car which was right in front of the store. I knew there was no way that I was going to leave her there alone with them. I considered my options (I thought of what a burden it is to be a good guy.) and went back in to confront them. I was working on the baddest ward (5B) at a mental hospital, so I was use to "fighting" crazy people but still, I was a little surprised at my lack of fear. About that time two cops walked in so I went on my way. Afterward I thought "That was like a test, and I passed, alright!"

  9. cube - yikes! gators! yikes! big dragonflies are creepy, too, but probably couldn't eat me in two bites!

you are absolutely brave if gators don't scare you (or maybe you're just used to them....)
